Great scenery and great course
I was in the Gaylord area and looked for a great course at a great value. I was not dissapointed at Wilderness Valley. Especially compared to Metro Detroit courses, $25 for a round at WV was an absolute steal. The course was in perfect condition, the scenery was majestic, the rate of play was ideal and the staff was superb. Some of the nicest fairways and greens I have ever seen.
Definitely recommend this course to anybody! Well worth the price.
Excellent Maintained
Greens were in excellent shape at Black Forest on this morning. We teed off at 645 am and there was no one in front of us. We had the course to ourself and played in under 3 hours. Greens had been cut and rolled true and the speed was excellent. Preferrred over Treetops, especially with the slow play there.
Course needs attention
I have played this course many times over the years and it has always been extremely challenging and in good shape. However, this time the traps were extremely rough (not raked, rocks present, weeds, etc.) and greens appeared to have some type of disease / dead spots in many places. Pins were also in the most brutal locations possible on two-thirds of the holes that day making course ridiculously difficult for anyone who knows this course and greens. Not sure what is happening here but hope they get this figured out soon.
Good course, bad greens.
I liked the layout of this course. However, the greens were in terrible shape. The price was too high for the condition of the greens.
Disappointing
The website & score card indicate that this is a Top 10 course in the state. I would like to know when they received this award? The greens and fairways on multiple holes had areas of dead grass. The faces of the bunkers were in terrible shape/washed out. You could also tell they had not been groomed, that day or the day before, or the day before that. I feel sorry for anyone paying full price. I'm so glad I didn't.
Great Value
I don't know if I would pay full price there but loved the course for the deal we got on GolfNow. Definitely will be going back next time I am in the area.
Well Maintained
Black Forest was in outstanding condition when I played it. The course is beautiful in every way. The greens are extremely difficult and unfortunately for me the person placing the tees the day I played must have been in a very poor mood.
Great Course, Challenging, and Beautiful Views
This was a challenging course but still fun to play. The greens are very fast and break in directions you wouldn't think. This is a great Northern Michigan course, that I would definitely recommend to anyone who wants to play championship level holes and see the beautiful Northern Michigan!
This course is a fun challenge.
I love this course. It's one of my favorites. The fairways are on the generous side, but the greens are very challenging. Myself, my wife, and my adolescent kids were all able to enjoy a fun round.
This course was a pleasent challange.
My friend and I enjoyed playing this course for a number of
reasons. Located just out side of Gaylord Mi. It was only a 1/2
hour drive from our homes. With rolling fairways cut out of the woods that demanded accurate tee shots the course grabbed
our attention from the first shot. The 18 holes are laid out so
that there is no turn on 9, you just play straight out and then
enjoy the ride back. The fairways are well maintained as well
as the greens that are deceiving difficult to putt. The abundance of sand traps more than make up for the lack
of water hazards, of which only effect holes 16 and 17.
We both agreed that we would play this course again.
.
Good Course, that does not have many challenges
Course is great for beginner itermediate golfer just trying to have fun game and not get frustrated with balls getting lost

Very good course with tough greens!
The set up is fair for most players, especially those that cannot hit their driver over 250 yards (there are a few holes for those that are big hitters that would be better off not hitting it so long).
There is no GPS on the carts and only 150 yard markers. The sprinkler heads are marked with yardages.
The greens are some of the hardest greens I have ever putted on! Having never played this course, I had no idea where to aim when approaching the greens, so I just shot at the pin. There were 10 holes where the pin location was on top of a ridge (on the edge of the ridge). Many of my nice approach shots left divots close to the pins and the ball rolled 15-50 feet from the hole.
Overall, this was a very nice course and I look forward to playing this course again!
Favorite michigan course
Just you and nature. Very little view of other holes. Greens are in great shape but tough. Fairways are beautiful.
Course is ridiculous! Greens or fairways should be rethought. NEED YARDAGE BOOKS!!!
Greeted by Proshop staff that basically said we shouldnt play because it is too tough - great salesman! sigh- Its ok to have sloping fairways and blind shots but to have that on the greens as well?! REALLY NEED a yardage book!!!!!! ESPECIALLY HERE!!!!, had no idea how far to hit tee shots - can I carry hazards? How far to dogleg? How far to this huge ridge...etc...Oh yeah..and thanks for the PIN PLACEMENTS!!!!!
Quaint Course
The greens are fast but has very few visible yardage markers. Tucked in quaint area where no cellphone signal reaches
Woodland wonder
I've played Black Forest many times, and I'm always struck by its beauty and challenge. Jeff, the pro, is a great host. We played as a twosome at 7:20 am and had turkeys (the real kind--not the ones who play 5 hour rounds) for companionship on two different holes.
Black Forest
This course is always an adventure. The only thing necessary before playing is to get in the mind set you will NOT be shooting your best score here. It is difficult but always entertaining. Score should not always matter when playing golf anyways. Enjoy the scenery and appreciate that Tom Doak did a masterful job in creating exactly what the owners wanted, a tough test with great visuals!
