Worst shape in 22 years !
Played this course for 22 years. Poorly mowed, poorly watered, back tees abandoned, and got excuses when stated to management. I've always enjoyed playing the course. Sad that I will not be back.
Disappointing Return
My girlfriends and I golfed here two years ago, and we absolutely loved it. We returned this year and couldn't believe how poorly maintained the grounds were. They didn't have appropriate score cards for Wilderness Valley (only Black Forest), and the signs on the the tee boxes were missing the par numbers. Additionally, one hole had two Labatt Blue beer cans serving as the blue tee markers. The employees were all friendly, but it is evident they need a lot of help over there. They did give us each a 9 hole voucher to use anytime since we didn't have time to golf 18 holes. However, we will not be returning next year unless things drastically change.
Great Layout, Poor Maintnence
My dad hasn't played here in 20 years, and near cried on the first tee at how deteriorated the course is. Working on a grounds crew myself, i could not have been more disappointed myself. The course could be beautiful, but mismanagement has ran it into the ground. Super sad.
Course is a bit run down
Not well maintained. It's too bad. It's in a beautiful setting.
A tragedy
We played the Wilderness Valley course, which could be a beauty. We were told they were having irrigation problems at both courses. However, what we saw was a total lack of care that went above and beyond irrigation problems. The tees boxes were not just dirt, they were trashy. We felt the course was being totally neglected. No sand in the traps and the greens were uneven to name just two of their problems.
Bad shape
The course did not have much grass on tees and fairways. Very nice setting, however, it did not appear that the course is taken care of. The greens were the best part, but still below average.
TLC needed
We have always enjoyed golfing here, nice track, friendly course design for all golfers, but it certainly missed the mark this year as the greens and fairways were in rather poor shape.
Crispy dry greens, conditions
Played here in June, when it had rained significantly in the days/weeks leading up. The greens were brown and hard as a rock. That was the biggest turn-off. Fairways were fair conditons, some areas patchy, and the tee boxes were the same.
This was once a beautiful setting with some forests, plush greens that were moderately challenging, and a layout with minimal elevation changes and gently rolling hills. If conditions were restored to my better memories of the place, I would definitely return again.
Course Condition sad
Upon arriving noticed a lot of little things not cared for-paint, lawn care, gardens untended, not enough ones to give change. Staff was all new but friendly. Course is comfortably challenging but greens had lots of bare spots. Ran into one of members upon completion and he said owners had not treated course in fall and so showed upon play. It wasn't because of bad spring weather, because we'd played 3 other courses in the area and they were in beautiful shape. Looked like owners hadn't spent money to get it ready. The good thing-price was very reasonable. By the way we saw no one else on the course.
Sprawling Test of Golf
Black Forest is a championship course that's really growing on my golf buddy and me, in spite of the atrocious fall weather on our last visit. This big, hilly, broad-shouldered course is a challenging but fair test of golf. Fairways are wide enough for a reasonably accurate golfer, and there's plenty of variety among the holes, with many being quite memorable. Doglegs, swamps, a small lake, and LOTS of sand bunkers keep your attention all the time. I've played many of the "name" courses in the Golf Mecca, and Black Forest is my favorite so far.
Over rated
For a state with this many fine golf courses I don,t see how this course was rated 14th best public course in Michigan. From the very beginning I was not pleased with the course and equipment. The road into the club was not auto suspension friendly, very rutted, the golf carts were dirty. The first tee was in poor shape as were most of the tees. The fairways were well mowed but in poor shape. The greens were weedy and pin placements were in impossible locations with extreme breaks on most holes. The overall maintenance was poor. I will not be back .
OK for the money!
The course "Wilderness Valley" was in less than perfect condition.Tee boxes need a lot of work and the greens have some kind of spotty blight on them,, but they still rolled fairly true even though they didn't look very good. Layout was quite dated and not very memorable. Still worth the $20 to play 18 , but I wouldn't pay any more. Sounds like playing the Black Forest is the way to go if you can play it for a good price.
needs help
course needs to be fix up. you can tell they have let it go. bunkers are bad fairways have lots of spots same with tee boxes. to many other course in area to playb this again dissappointed
Great layout conditioning worse
Played this course four times. It is a great track. Challenging, fun, scenery is great, people are really nice. This year the condition is noticeably worse. Greens had bare spots and were inconsistent. Areas around greens were often bare. Traps were poor condiotion. Some needed sand. Looked like not maintained. Tees were a little shaggy. There, like normal, was almost no one else on the course. I am hoping that that lack of customers has not caught up. On other years we marveled at how the course could be in such great shape with no one tjere. May have cught up. Again, great layout. Just conditioning not there today
Awfull Greens
If you like greens with all kinds of green gummy fungus this is the place for you. The greens were very bad and bumpy
Nice track but very challenging.
Played the blues, pars were tough to get. Lots of slope. Fairway and greenside bunkers challenge your shot selection. Greens are large and undulating. Cool looking holes though. You are definitely Up North! Could use a little TLC overall.
Tough Greens
Great layout for a golf course deep in the woods cut out of nowhere with the toughnest greens I have ever played. Don't forget your camera!
Play time
Sent us off the back 9 as there was a group of 5 carts lined up on the front nine. Great play and in good time. Friendly folks back at the bar when we finished with good drinks. All in all great time.
The hype is real
For the most part the course was in good shape. Some of the fairways on the front nine had some damage. Greens are amazing. Staff was excellent, however if your on a road trip like I was and was counting on a shower....don't.
Great Layout, Very Challenging. Fairway problems
This was my third time playing Black Forest. One of the hardest courses I've every played, but enjoyable. Great layout. Unfortunately this time the fairways were blemished. Lots of dead spots. Certainly wasn't for a lack of water because the fairways were absolutely soaked.
