Great course for the money!
Great course! Sometimes the older members or what I assume they are can bop around like they own the course.
What happened?!??
Played the couse in June and I was pleasantly surprised at how nice it was. The course was packed and the pace was extremely slow but it was a nice day on a nice course so we didn't mind. The course was in HORRIBLE shape this past weekend. It looked like a different place. It's really a shame because the layout is great. If something doesn't change, this will quickly become known as one of the worst courses in the Grand Rapids area.
Highlands
I haven't played there in about 2 years ,it has really gone done hill.the course used to be a 4 now a 2 at best
This course should just close
The good: The men's locker room was awesome. I could easily imagine Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus sitting in there getting their shoe shined. Very cool.
The course is simply a joke. The greens were like putting on cobblestone and the fairways were about 30% dead. The tee boxes were miserable to hit from and mostly dead.
The money spent on new carts w/GPS would've been better spent on updating the irrigation system (or putting one in?).
Very, very disappointing round of golf and I will never go back...and discourage anyone but starting golfers from playing it as well. Dozens of better options in the area, for the same price ($23).
Conditions have gone downhill.
I haven't played The Highlands in a couple of years. It was nice back then but today it is horrible. Fairways have tons of dead spots and weeds. Bunkers were hard pan and haven't been trimmed. Greens were not good either. Staff is very friendly. I will not be playing here again this year.
Nice course
Overall he course was very nice. Some standing water in the fareways
Bad conditions
In general I enjoy this course, it is fairly forgiving with wayward shots and a nice layout. However, currently the conditions are pretty pathetic. I teed off around 11:30, several bunkers/fairways were water filled (it hasn't rained in a while), and greens/fairways/tee boxes were pretty ugly. Still worth the $20 for a morning round, but that's about it.
Wedding parties only are there concern.
It was on the warm side of things, the staff was great but the conditions of the course were challenging and poor. Rock hard greens that rolled slow. You make the call.
Average Course, With Potential
Not a bad course for the money. The scenery is nice, the holes have challenging layouts with deep bunkers and tricky rough and greens. However, the ground doesn't seem to be well maintained, as most of the course was hardpan. Also, the course seems to stack groups up very close together, causing ridiculously slow play (spent the entire round waiting for 2 groups in front of us, and had 3 groups stacked up right behind us). All in all a decent course, plus the carts are pretty fancy.
Highlands does not impress
The course is not in very good shape! Spotty fairways, packed sand bunkers, no water on course along with decrepited restrooms. The round took five hours to play!! Will not return until a big makeover!
Ross Tradition
Classic Ross design. Traditional country club course with holes close together for ease of walking. Good variety. Challenging, but fun. Fairways need some work, but greens are great.
Good golf.
Other than a few greens being in a little rough shape, the course was in nice shape. I enjoyed the round.
First Time Out in 2015
Sunny, no wind and 40 degrees. To be fair, the course had only been open for a week and the grass had not started to grow. It looks like a good course for the money.
Good price for fall golf
Lost 4 balls in the leaves, but what can you expect for November.
Couse is still in decent condition. Lots of leaves in a few places.
Highlands
Course was in good shape - great design - great greens. Play was slow at times.
good layout but over rated
Had high hopes heard a lot of good things about the course. enjoy Donald Ross designs. The course was beat up bad, divots and ball marks everywhere. Greens were good but no one repairs ball marks. The fairways were poor, weeds all over, had some bad lies in the middle of the fairway. Numerous areas that were muddy or dried up with little or no grass. I'm glad I got a deal because I wouldn't pay any more. Group in front of us were slow constantly looking for balls refused to let us play through. Caused a back up. The staff sent a 2 some out onto the 8th tee in front of us due to a tournament. Unbelievable. disappointed would not go back.
Fun course to play
Behind a "gold tee" league so pace was super slow. While the league did their best, overall extremely slow 9 and was not able to get into any rhythm. Greens and overall course layout are just challenging enough to make it fun. Good deal for the quality of the course.
Average course but packed
Good little course that had some challenges. Got it for less than 20 bucks thru a hot deal. For that price you couldn't beat it but we waited for every shot we hit. A little surprising considering it was a Wednesday morning. It was only my first time playing it so not sure how it normally is but did seem to get a lot if business. The course was in good shape not manicured but very playable. The greens were very fast.
Hope you have 6 hrs to kill
I really enjoy this layout. I live right by the course and it used to be run well. I have worked in the golf industry for years and I understand the game is struggling and you have to make money. It's a shame to see how poorly the staff runs this place now. The rates are good but don't even bother making a tee time because you won't go off on time. Every time I go there which used to be frequent it gets worse. The last time I played it took 3 and a half hours for 9. Ridiculous. The staff has no courtesy for the people who actually have the decency to make a tee time. They will pack 5 groups into one time. I am just bummed to watch this great course deteriorate so rapidly to the point where you can't even factor in having fun because you will be out there for six hours. Who enjoys being on the course for almost a full work day? All I can say is I hope the staff starts to show some pride and start worrying about what happens on the course and not just the cash register
