The Threetops par 3 course at Treetops Resort in Gaylord is considered one of America's best short courses and offers possibly the best public-access play. Designed by co-owner Rick Smith, the nine-hole, par-27 course features holes ranging from 140-219 yards and is set on similarly undulating hills, with elevation changes of up to 170 feet.

Dunmaglas Golf Course is a lesser-known, Scottish-inspired course just around the corner from nationally recognized Bay Harbor Golf Club and Crooked Tree Golf Club. Dunmaglas was originally built in 1992 by owner Chuck MacGillivray, who with the help of Larry Mancour and Dean Refram, built a very difficult course set on nearly 900 acres.

Bay Harbor Golf Club is one of northern Michigan's most spectacularly placed golf courses, set on bluffs overlooking Little Traverse Bay and Lake Michigan. The course was designed by Arthur Hills and is an upscale, semi-private facility with GPS in the carts and a clubhouse and restaurant overlooking the lake.

Timber Ridge Golf Club is only a 10-minute drive from Michigan State University's sprawling campus, but it seems a lot farther than that when you get to the course. This is anything but a bustling, crowded scene. Instead, you get a course in the trees with some unexpected elevation change.

Sweetgrass Golf Club in Harris is the newest addition to Michigan's Upper Peninsula, part of the Island Resort & Casino. Designed by Michigan-based architect Paul Albanese, the course plays on gently rolling and at most points wide-open land - that's a change from nearby Greywalls and Timberstone, which that feature great elevation changes.

Greywalls Golf Course at Marquette Golf Club was designed by Mike Devries, who is a Michigan native and interned under Tom Doak. Devries has a similar minimalist approach, moving very little land here. That's apparent, as there are few flat lies to be found and the course can make a golfer's first time here a little uncomfortable, especially considering some of the most difficult holes come right out of the gate.
