Not an overly long course, but tight, which I think is a good combination. Shouldn't be able to have your cake and eat it too. This is a players course that will force you to either be straight or very creative. The par 3s from the tips are long (over 200) and a few of the par 4s are driver - fairway wood or driver - long iron. Beautiful clubhouse and super friendly people.

The greens at GGC (Gowanie Golf Club)are the best I've played, this year!

This is a course that rewards solid consistent play. Plan to add additional strokes to your score for poor shots!

Members at Gowanie compete in Tournaments and Skin games almost every week. It's a good group of members.

I have friends that compete in Michigan Armature events, that plan to join Gowanie next year for the competitive atmosphere.

    Excellent club!

    Thanks Don

I am a member at Gowanie and have been for many years and would not normally post a rating of the course, but after reading Mark's rating I felt compelled. Mark has nothing but pleasant thoughts regarding the course, but rated it as a 2.5 star course. Not logical! His assessment is well thought out in the sense that Gowanie is very tight and requires precisely played shots, however, the course is certainly fair and rewards a well-played shot, but penalizes a poor shot. Considering its length (just over 6400 yards from the back tees), this coupled with smallish putting surfaces are its primary mechanisms of defense. The course is maintained exceptionally well, and is a pleasure to play 5 or 6 days per week as I do!

I just played this course in a Michigan Amateur qualifying round and have also played the course twice before. I can tell you that the course rating does not reflect the difficulty of this course from tee to green. If you do not have Claustrophobia (the fear of having no escape and being closed in) often resulting in panic attacks, you will soon have the disorder if you cannot hit 250 yard drives with pinpoint precision to 25 yard wide fairways. And even if you can, don't take a deep breath until you get to your ball because on several of the holes your approach shot may be completely compromised by overhanging tree limbs.

On the up side, the greens are terrific and roll smooth and fast. The sand traps are great and offer up great recovery shots.

I will tell you the course is completely fair if you understand what you are in for on the first tee, and I would like to play it again... next year. But for me this course would not be enjoyable to play once or twice a week as a club member.
